Warbird Beginnings

This TurboGoose was converted in 1970 to turboprop engines as serial number 1226. The Goose itself however, began its life as a proposed civilian seaplane which first flew in 1937, though with the outbreak of WWII, military orders dominated the civilian project. The US Navy was the largest operator though the RAF and RCAF also operated the type. The Goose first gained its name from the RAF.

Enlarged Cabin

As converted to turboprop power, the G21G TurboGoose featured a larger cabin, enlarged windows and wingtip floats. Prior to conversion to turboprop, some of the post-war "Geese" featured four Lycoming GSO480 piston engines.

Widgeon

N1340V is a 1941 Grumman G-44 Widgeon (US Navy and Coast Guard J4F1), which like the Goose, were planned for civil production but found large orders instead from the US Navy, US Air Force and RAF (Gosling) as a light utility amphibian.

Howard's Pride

Though the Ike and the Mike were nearly identical, the Ike was considered the faster of the two and held the World Inverted Speed Record.

Cutaway

The Ike carried Race 39 while the Mike carried Race 38. Mike was the DGA-4 and the Ike was the DGA-5. DGA stood for "Darned Good Aircraft" and was applied to all of Howard's designs, including the Pete and the Mr. Mulligan racers.
